Job Summary

The consultant anaesthesiologist is responsible to the Chief Medical Officer. The anaesthesiologist examines, and provides adequate analgesia and anaesthesia for patients during surgeries. The anaesthesiologist is a member of the senior medical team and he/she provides leadership and guidance in establishing the highest standards of care and ensuring optimal delivery of quality care in line with international best practices.

Main responsibilities

  • Monitor patient before, during, and after anaesthesia; pre-empt and counteract adverse reactions or complications.
  • Monitor patient conditions during treatments, procedures, or activities.
  • Record type and amount of anaesthesia and patient condition throughout procedure.
  • Provide and maintain life support and airway management and help prepare patients for emergency surgery whilst implementing advanced life support techniques.
  • Prepare patients physically for medical procedures.
  • Administer anaesthetic agents or sedatives to control pain during medical/surgical procedures using various and appropriate anaesthetic approaches.
  • Examine patient, obtain medical history, and use diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures.
  • Position patient on operating table to maximize patient comfort and surgical accessibility.
  • Coordinate administration of anaesthesia with surgeons during operation.
  • Decide when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be sent to another room or ward or to be sent home following outpatient surgery.
  • Monitor patient progress or responses to treatments.
  • Confer with other medical professionals to determine type and method of anaesthetic or sedation to render patient insensible to pain.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to plan or provide treatment.
  • Train medical providers.
  • Provide medical care and consultation in many settings, prescribing medication and treatment and referring patients for surgery.
  • Manage anaesthesiology services, coordinating them with other medical activities and formulating plans and procedures.
  • Schedule and maintain use of surgical suite, including operating, wash-up, waiting rooms, and anaesthetic and sterilizing equipment.

Qualifications

  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
  • Fellowship in the Faculty of Anaesthesia of either the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and/or the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN);

OR

Equivalent fellowship in a country where you can obtain license to practice in Nigeria

  • Must be a minimum of two-years post-fellowship.
  • Full registration and current practicing licence with the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
  • Foreign training and experience is an added advantage.

Knowledge/skills required

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work long, flexible and on-call hours, often under pressure
  • Good practical skills
  • Skills in regional anaesthesia, intensive / critical care, neonatal anaesthesia, and pain management are added advantages
  • Ability to solve problems
  • Effective decision-making skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Communication skills, compassion and a good bedside manner
  • Drive to continue learning throughout career.
  • Strong IT/computer skills
