Job Summary

The consultant Ophthalmologist is responsible to the Chief Medical Officer. The ophthalmologist examines, and provides adequate surgical care for patients with a wide variety of eye conditions. The ophthalmologist is a member of the senior medical team and he/she provides leadership and guidance in establishing the highest standards of care and ensuring optimal delivery of quality care in line with international best practices.

Main responsibilities

  • Analyze patient’s medical history, medication allergies, physical condition, and examination results to verify the necessity of any surgical procedure and to determine best options for eye illnesses.
  • Prescribe preoperative and postoperative treatments and procedures, such as sedatives, diets, antibiotics, and preparation and treatment of the patient’s eye(s).
  • Direct and coordinate activities of nurses, assistants, specialists, residents and other medical staff.
  • Examine patient to provide information on medical condition and surgical risk.
  • Follow established surgical techniques during surgical procedures.
  • Operate on patients to correct eye impairments, repair injuries, prevent and treat diseases, or improve or restore patients’ eye functions.
  • Refer patient to medical specialist or other practitioners when necessary.
  • Conduct research to develop and test surgical techniques that can improve operating procedures and outcomes.
  • Examine instruments, equipment, and operating room to ensure sterility.


  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
  • Fellowship in the Faculty of Ophthalmology of either the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and/or the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN);


  • Equivalent fellowship in a country where you can obtain license to practice in Nigeria
  • Must be a minimum of two-years post-fellowship.
  • Full registration with the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
  • Foreign training and experience is an added advantage.
